Articles > General laptop battery problemsGeneral laptop battery problems 1. If your new laptop battery does not work - check it is fully charged. Laptop batteries are usually delivered in a discharged state; they must be charged before use. It is recommended that Li-Ion laptop battery receives initial charge of about twelve hours. However NiMH laptop battery requires twenty-four hours charge. Refer to the laptop manual for charging instructions. In a case of the battery fully charged still does not work, check if the battery is inserted properly in the laptop. 2. If your laptop shuts down automatically - check laptops Power Management settings. It could happen they are set to turn laptop off when battery reaches a low level. 3. If your laptop battery gets hot - take it out and let it cool down for a while. If the problem persists once the battery is inserted back into the laptop the battery could be defective. Remember that it is normal for the laptop battery to become quite warm during use. Therefore take the battery out only in a case it gets too hot. 4. If the color of new laptop battery is different to the original - as long as the laptop battery is the right model number and the battery ratings match each other this is not a problem. 5. If you have lost laptop battery – it is possible to identify the battery you need from the laptops instruction manual. Otherwise most suppliers should be able to determine the battery from the model of your laptop. Here are some points concerning short laptop battery life: 1. As your laptop battery gets older it slowly gets worse and worse. This reflects gradual decrease in its capacity as laptop batteries suffer degradation through usage. It is a rule that the more you use the battery the quicker the degradation process is. This degradation occurs because electrolyte migrates away from electrodes and active material falls off electrodes. As soon as it happens it is necessary to replace the battery. The average laptop battery lasts between one and three years. 2. If laptop battery is relatively new and does not work properly, it could be because it draws more power than during manufacturer tests. Find out how the manufacturer tests were performed and what type of applications they ran. 3. If you have NiMH battery and it has a short life, it could be due to the memory effect. Memory effect causes the battery to hold less charge. It can occur when a battery is repeatedly recharged after being partially discharged. In this case the battery appears to "remember" a smaller capacity. Unfortunately there is no way to solve this problem restoring the original memory of the laptop battery. 4. There is no "average" laptop battery lifespan as it depends on so many factors. The most essential factors are the size of laptop monitor, battery capacity and type of apps being run. Most batteries power laptops between 1.5 and 3 hours. However battery technology improves and 6 to 8 hours battery work is starting to become common.
